This project proposes a new mixed-use building on a prominent corner site at 13–19 Wimbledon Hill Road, replacing the existing Argos unit. The scheme delivers new commercial space at ground floor level with 20 residential apartments arranged across five upper storeys.

The architectural concept is rooted firmly in the character and material language of Wimbledon, drawing inspiration from its historic streetscape and civic architecture. The design combines red brick with green ceramic and metal detailing, reinterpreting local themes such as ornamentation, craftsmanship, public art, and the expressive “top” of the building inspired by historic department stores and tram architecture.

Carefully articulated elevations feature fluted and ribbed decorative brickwork, accentuating balconies and shopfronts while reinforcing the rhythm of the street. Ornamental metalwork forms a key visual element, with balustrades inspired by an abstracted wheatsheaf motif referencing Wimbledon’s agrarian heritage. The roofscape is discreetly set back and wrapped in neutral metallic louvres, allowing it to merge with the sky while maintaining a strong architectural crown.

A refined palette of red brick and “Invisible Green” is used throughout, complemented by precast concrete coping matched to the brickwork. The result is a contemporary yet contextually grounded building that enhances the townscape and reinforces the identity of Wimbledon Hill Road.
