The Sound Pods
The beautiful and picturesque Malham Cove is located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The place of inspiration for a wide group of artists that appears in various of their works. The design proposal is to create a specific place, an enclave in its own unique edition, a place of and inspiration, creation, rest and meditation. It is directed to people who are sensitive to stimuli but not only, also for those who decide to flee from the city noise for a while and spend some time alone.
The project is based on the understanding of the existing environment and conditions in the area, using a stone substrate and its cracks, wind, and a specific sound appearing on the cliff as well as underneath. These factors define the position and the form of each individual pod. Every single one of them is designed as a large wind-bell, which produces a specific sound that reacts with different parts of the human body and provides a healing/well-being experience. All together they create a harmony, which is complemented by the sound coming from a large sound mirror that can change depending on the season. The full experience is amplified in each pot by the small individual sound mirrors built into the structures. By using materials such as bamboo and fabrics, we get a light touch, sustainable structure that does not interfere with the natural environment and can be quickly disassembled or relocated.
