CONTEXT
The project examined the redevelopment of a central Wimbledon site to combine 20 homes with commercial use at ground level. Feasibility work and a concept were prepared for pre-application discussions, with the proposal developed in relation to the area’s established streetscape.
ARCHITECTURAL RESPONSE
Red brick, green ceramic and metal details draw on Wimbledon’s civic architecture and historic shopfronts. Fluted and ribbed brickwork marks balconies and commercial frontages, while wheatsheaf-inspired balustrades refer to the area’s agrarian heritage. The roof is set back and enclosed by neutral metallic louvres, distinguishing it from the main elevations. Its form takes cues from historic department stores and tram architecture, with brick-coloured precast coping completing the material palette.
