CONTEXT
The Grade II-listed building was designed by Sir Edwin Cooper and completed in 1922. The project addresses refurbishment, envelope and roof interventions, terraces and the long-term performance of a historic commercial asset.
ARCHITECTURAL RESPONSE
The proposal reimagines how the original architect might have designed the building in the new context created by the Gherkin. The roof was redesigned with new dormers and a glazed notch between the Bury Court and St Mary Axe elevations, reinforcing the building's symmetry and bringing daylight into its deepest areas. The mechanical and telecommunications equipment on the roof was replaced by a new open terrace, while balconies were introduced at each floor within the notch. Together, these interventions support occupant wellbeing by providing access to fresh air and planted external space during the working day.
