CONTEXT
The proposal brought together flexible office space, retail and residential accommodation within the established character of Pimlico. Its massing and expression responded to the area's mansion-block context while creating a more public relationship at ground level.
ARCHITECTURAL RESPONSE
The design divides the site into four modern mansion blocks. Their varied heights mediate between the substantial massing of Hindon Court on Wilton Road to the west, the lower scale of Gillingham Row to the north, the Conservation Area to the south, and the Queen Mother Sports Centre to the east. The base is clad in glazed ceramic tiles that reference nearby public buildings, including pubs and stations, and is sculpted into arched forms inspired by local ground-floor details. The upper levels combine light buff London stock brick, as found on Gillingham Row, with white detailing characteristic of Pimlico. The roofs offer a contemporary interpretation of the historic pitched and butterfly roof forms found locally. The building was designed to reduce its carbon footprint and construction time through a hybrid steel and cross-laminated timber structural system.
